Let's Make a "Visual Thesaurus" or "Constellation" Chart of AI and Data Center effects (first order or direct, second order or indirect, and third order or induced)

Updated: Feb 19

Are you familiar with those visualization technique types? There’s an online “visual thesaurus” at “visual thesaurus.com”. I clipped this image today:

Think about "Data Center" in the center, and what each direct effect topic can be named in that first ring out from what effectively becomes a "nucleus" for an idea or mental model.

This example shows a special kind of "radial bar chart." This kind of diagram depicts relationships between some identified "thing" and the "ripples" that thing makes when dropped into a pond. [Somebody: Que the Grateful Dead playing "Ripple" ]

These charts measure effectiveness, result, or impact, as each slice of pie extends from the center to an outer edge, reflecting its total score on a y-axis criterion. That "y-axis" data is presented in what functions like a bar chart. The y-axis can be comprised of multiple measures, too, like a total score representing dozens or hundreds of specific frames (to use a bowling analogy). For example, "behind" the 17 United Nations Sustainability Goals that listed in Figure 2, are almost exactly 170 sub-goals, that have been selected for inclusion because their effects -- additive, combined, and possibly magnified or synergetic -- are expected to be integral to achieving each goal.

More content to come! Please join this open-source effort to name the first, second, and third order effects in terms of what I like to think of as "Seven 'E.Z.' Pieces": ecology, economics, employment, environment, equity, ethics, and ekistics. [Note: Small nude "art" photos are shown at the weblink to "Seven Easy Pieces" exhibition, circa 1975.]

What does that list leave out? And, for any additional ideas it could be better if there's an "e-word" for it. What ideas to you have, for adding to the second-level and third level effects? This web page has an expanding list of related impacts, which I will work on sorting and classifying into these different E-word groups/hierarchies. https://datacenters.halttheharm.net/impacts/?pg=3

Ecology

Habitat. Wildlife. Surface Water and water.

Human health. Health for "all the children of all the species for all time." (William McDonough).

Toxins. Circular ecology loops, one for "technical" nutrients and one for bionutrients.

Mutanogens, Precautionary Principle, Green Chemistry)

Economics

Input-Output Models and Benefit-Cost Modeling.

Local economy "ping pong"

Triple Bottom Line and Donut Economy Modeling

Reliable Prosperity Pattern Language. A Pattern Language for Ecovillages and Intentional Communities

Skill sharing. Tool sharing. Resource sharing.

Employment

Jobs over the investment/project/intervention lifetime

Provisions for local employment. Apprenticeships. Training. Recruiting.

Employment multipliers.

Job sharing.

Environment

Air quality. Related to energy sources. Chemicals used and stored on site.

Check for toxins, mutanagens, precautionary principle, etc.

Water and water quality

Land, land-use, siting

You get the idea . . . there's so much more fun here to be had!

Equity

Ethics

Ekistics

  1. Ideas from preexisting, comprehensive design guidelines and frameworks.

  2. Super Optimum Decisions (Stuart Nagel concept).

  3. Triple bottom line and Reliable Prosperity models hierarchy of design patterns.

  4. Architecture 2030 and 2030 Districts
